The CGPM (General Conference on Weights and Measures) wrapped up its 28th meeting this week. The conference is where Member States, Associate Members, and International Liaison Organizations of the BIPM (Bureau International des Poids et Mesures) get together “to make decisions on scientific, institutional and financial matters related to the BIPM and its work.”
Participants met at the Palais des Congrès de Versailles in France for three days where most sessions of the conference were live streamed. The first day was dominated by organizational meetings and reports, accompanied by an afternoon poster session and wrapped up with an evening reception at the Eiffel Tower. The second and third day of sessions included topics such as: Modernization of the BIPM, Metrology for New Technologies, Universal Adherence, Metrology and Digitalization, and Challenges and Future for Time Metrology.
Draft Resolutions were introduced during corresponding sessions and then voted on the final day before the close of the conference. The BIPM has information about the CGPM Resolutions 1-7 adopted during the conference on their website.
- Resolution 1 – On the dotation of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures for years 2028-2031
- Resolution 2 – On universal adherence to the Metre Convention
- Resolution 3 – On the further digital transformation of the global metrology
- Resolution 4 – On the future definition of the second
- Resolution 5 – On the technical actions needed to ensure the continuity of UTC
- Resolution 6 – On the definition of an international lunar reference time scale and its traceability to UTC
- Resolution 7 – On the adoption of Rules of Procedure of the General Conference on Weights and Measures
Notably, three resolutions adopted (Resolutions 4, 5, & 6) concerned timekeeping. The CCTF (Consultative Committee for Time and Frequency) President, Dr. Noël Dimarcq, outlined the importance of these resolutions in his Statement, posted along with Statements made by the Director of the BIPM, Annette Koo, and President of the CIPM (International Committee for Weights and Measures), Dr. Wynand Louw, on the CGPM press page.
